TWO pimps have been jailed for life for allegedly forcing a housemaid into the vice trade and raping her.
The Bangladeshi men, aged 30 and 34, were found guilty by the High Criminal Court in February of human trafficking, holding the victim against her will and raping her.
Their 38-year-old Indonesian victim had reportedly run away from her employer’s house a month after arriving in Bahrain, in February last year, after being promised a better paid job to help her family back home.
She was held captive in several apartments and forced to have sex with 25 men.
However, the defendants were initially only jailed for 10 years before prosecutors requested the maximum punishment in an appeal lodged at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court.
The appeal court accepted their request and handed them 25 years in jail each.
“The defendants raped their victim and cannot be handed just 10 years behind bars,” read the appeal court ruling.
“The defendants locked up the victim in several apartments before raping her. They also forced her into prostitution.”
She was often left trapped in a room with just a mattress on the floor and no air conditioning.
The woman managed to flee her captors when they forgot to lock an apartment’s front door and she reported her ordeal to the authorities.
The defendants will be deported after completing their sentences and will have to pay fines of BD2,000 each.
