The 116th Executive Council of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, also known as UNWTO has concluded the work of the 116th session of its Executive Council.
The session was held for the first time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, with the participation of a delegation from the Kingdom of Bahrain headed Minister of Industry and Commerce and Tourism and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority H.E. Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani, accompanied by the CEO of BTEA, Dr. Nasser Qaedi, as well as top officials of international organisations from more than 35 nations.
This session focused on discussing the changing trends in global tourism in a post-pandemic world, the future of the tourism sector as a fundamental pillar of sustainable development, as well as the need for international cooperation to overcome the negative effects of the Corona pandemic on the tourism and travel sectors, and to make positive changes that ensure tourism focuses on health, sustainability, and better use of technology in the future.
Participants in these meetings also discussed a variety of topics, including ways to improve international cooperation and joint governance models, analyzing the new view of the tourism sector, utilising technology to facilitate travel procedures and the tourism sector's global commitment to sustainable practices.
The session also examined the global economic situation and its impact on the tourism and travel sectors, as well as the advancement of the tourism sector and adaptation to future demands to achieve greater sustainability and flexibility and build a brighter future for tourism worldwide.
The Kingdom of Bahrain represented the Middle East region on the World Tourism Organisation's Executive Council after being elected by the Council's members last year for a four-year term ending in 2024. The Kingdom is also a member of the World Tourism Organisation's Credentials Committee.
It is worth noting that the Kingdom of Bahrain, represented by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, was chosen among the members of the World Tourism Organisation's Executive Council for the period between 2018 and 2021 from among 35 countries during the 109th meeting of the organisation's Executive Council, which was held in Bahrain in October 2018, and then for an additional 4 years in 2021. This selection was made in recognition of the Kingdom of Bahrain's efforts to develop the tourism sector at the local level following a well-defined strategy, and its prominent position as a global tourist destination.
