LONDON: Political will, stability, economic prosperity and societal awareness are key to Bahrain’s religious and ethnic diversity, said King Hamad Global Centre for Peaceful Coexistence board of trustees’ chairman Dr Shaikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa.
In a lecture themed “Embracing diversity in multi-religious societies”, he reviewed historical and contemporary evidence to present Bahrain as a distinctive and vivid model for embracing religious and sectarian diversity and peaceful coexistence among the various components of society.
Dr Shaikh Khalid delivered the lecture at Nottingham-Trent University in the UK.
He stressed the royal support to the establishment of Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia which, he said, reflects His Majesty King Hamad’s adherence to the approach set by his forefathers in building a harmonious society among its various sects, religions and ethnicities.
That legacy was achieved through initiatives that preserved the heritage and identity of Bahraini society on the one hand, and ensured acceptance and respect for pluralism and diversity on the other.
He stressed the importance of these successive political efforts throughout history in raising the level of awareness of Bahraini society and facilitating the integration of ethnic and religious minorities and their homogeneity in an atmosphere of brotherhood.
He praised the intellectual openness that characterises the people of Bahrain, who are the main engine for spreading the spirit of tolerance and peaceful coexistence in society.
