A TEENAGER has been found guilty of stealing BD11,000 from his father to pay for purchases of Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) mobile game.
The 16-year-old Bahraini was sentenced to six months in jail and fined BD1,000 by the High Criminal Court yesterday.
He was accused and convicted of misusing the father’s electronic signatures and obtaining money through deception.
He was also convicted of logging into the 65-year-old man’s BenefitPay app without permission. His divorced mother initially faced accusations of aiding and abetting her son but was not convicted of any charges.
The defendant was not tried in child court because he was facing trial in a case with an adult co-defendant.
“The children’s reformation and rehabilitation centre will submit a report to the court after he has served half of his term,” read verdict documents.
The father told Public Prosecution that he was shocked to find out that he had been scammed after returning from a trip to Pakistan.
He said that he discovered the scheme when he found out he only had BD3,000 left in his bank account when he earlier had BD14,000.
The parents-of-six had divorced in 2020 and the 44-year-old housewife took custody of all the children with whom she now lives in Muharraq.
