A workshop that focused on biometrics technologies and other measures for border management was held in Bahrain.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Bahrain organised the event in co-operation with the Interior Ministry.
The workshop – Legal Identity, Border Security and Safe Mobility – followed an agreement signed between IOM and the Saudi-based Naif Arab University of Security Sciences to establish the region’s first Arab Centre for Technical Co-operation on Migration and Border Management in Riyadh.
“The United Nations strategy for legal identity continues to guide IOM’s collaboration efforts in the Arab region and identity management remains a critical component in fulfilling the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda,” said IOM Middle East and North Africa regional director Othman Belbeisi. “IOM aims to support efforts of relevant authorities from governments of Arab states to ensure a co-ordinated approach on migration and border governance, at a time when states are increasingly looking for technical advice on evidence-driven policies to effectively manage human mobility and enhance identity management.”
More than 30 regional government officials attended the event to discuss safe migration across the region.
