Reports said that the bus, which had departed Khamis Mushayt and was heading to Abha, indicated problems with breaks, which led to the collision with the barrier at the end of a bridge, causing it to overturn and catch fire.
The Aqabat Shaar is a 14 kilometre-long road that was opened over 40 years ago.
The road, which has been cut through mountains, consists of 11 tunnels and 32 bridges, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
