The Golden Gate Bridge, one of the world's most iconic bridges, sings a musical tune after the changes made to the railings of the bicycle path that produce music when the wind blows through them.
The situation was recorded and posted on social media where some described the sound as eerie and annoying while others found it angelic and peaceful. Ray Ryan, a long-time San Francisco resident, described the noise as "haunting yet kind of beautiful".
The 90-year-old bridge's musical hum stemmed from its retrofit project, which is designed to allow the bridge an aerodynamic advantage against high and strong wind conditions to ensure the structural integrity of the bridge and its safety.
The melodious hum was an inevitable phenomenon, “We knew going into the handrail replacement that the bridge would sing during exceptionally high winds from the west. We are pleased to see the new railing is allowing wind to flow more smoothly across the bridge”, according to Highway & Transportation District spokesperson Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz.
