I WAS surprised to find that I was obliged to pay a tip to the delivery driver after ordering a meal using a popular smartphone app.
It’s not that I mind handing over some loose change or even a couple of dinars for exemplary service (the food arriving hot for a change!) but I feel it needs to be above and beyond what is expected after you pay a fair price for a product.
As a newcomer to the kingdom, I would welcome some advice from your family of readers and online visitors as to what is the etiquette for tipping in Bahrain?
In the US it is sort of mandatory yet the practice is frowned upon in some Asian countries and, as for my English friends, they will only tip provided there is not a ‘service charge’ added to the bill in a restaurant, hotel or coffee shop.
I always worry when I leave money on the table whether it actually ends up in the hands of the waitress, or not.
Also, do taxi drivers expect a tip here?
