KUWAIT plans to block access to WhatsApp calls as part of preventive measures similar to those taken by some GCC countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, reports our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej quoting local media.
WhatsApp calls have been blocked in some other Arab countries also, it reported. The blocking process faces several difficulties given the large number of applications that provide free calling and messaging services, such as Viber and Tango.
The report quoted Kuwaiti MP Jenan Bushehri who criticised a tender floated by the country’s communication and information technology regulatory authority for developing a Kuwaiti international electronic portal that could be used to prevent WhatsApp communications. She said the tender was aimed at monitoring internet users.
