More than 300 bikers from across the kingdom and neighbouring Saudi Arabia went on a charity ride yesterday to spread smiles for little ones struggling with childhood cancer, as well as to raise awareness and support.
The event was organised by Bahrain Future Society for Youth’s Smile Initiative in co-operation with Falcon Riders, one of Bahrain Bikers’ groups.
The ‘Smile Initiative’ carries out numerous activities in September to raise awareness on childhood cancer, and collect funds for parents to support children suffering from the disease.
The riders gathered at The Avenues Mall, Bahrain at 6.30am yesterday and zipped around the island before ending the charitable journey by 8.45am at IKEA Bahrain.
“This is our third year to go on the ride to raise awareness about cancer and we intend to continue our support forever,” Bahrain Desi Riders co-leader Yasser Hanif told the GDN.
“We need to raise awareness about the pain that children and their parents undergo while battling the disease, and riding a bike with the message is our way of reaching out to people.
“There were more than 300 people representing several groups of Bahrain Bikers, alongside teams from Saudi Arabia, and the numbers have been growing since the Smile Ride campaign was started years ago.”
Every September, people around the world rally to raise awareness about childhood cancer by pinning on golden ribbons that symbolise and honour the youngsters suffering from the disease, as well as staging activities.
