BOXING – BAHRAIN’S Danis Latypov bowed out of contention yesterday for a place in the men’s boxing tournament at the Paris Olympic Games 2024.
Latypov lost 0-5 on points to former world championships silver-medallist Davit Chaloyan of Armenia in their men’s over-92kg round-of-32 bout at the Boxing Road to Paris Second World Qualification Tournament, currently taking place in Bangkok, Thailand.
National boxing team head coach Tony Davis told the GDN from the Thai capital: “We came up with the tactics, Danis looked nice and sharp before going into the ring, but he just couldn’t carry those tactics out, which led to the overall result.
“He was going well in the first round, but then sort of switched off for a second and walked into a straight backhand, which he received the count for. That kind of lost him that first round, even though he was going well. He couldn’t really recover from that.”
Thirty-three-year-old Latypov was aiming to make an historic second appearance for Bahrain at this year’s Olympiad, having qualified for the men’s boxing event at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
Bahrain still have one more hopeful competing in the qualifiers in Azat Makhmetov, also 33.
Makhmetov will be lacing up his gloves today for his men’s 51kg fight against Keymberth Jose Gonzalez Solorzano of Venezuela. Their meeting is also in the round of 32, and it will be Solorzano’s second bout in their weight class after earlier defeating Tashi Wangdi of Bhutan 5-0 on points in his first match.
“We dust ourselves off now as we go again tomorrow,” Davis said of Makhmetov’s fight. “Azat is ready to face his Venezuelan opponent, and hopefully we can get Bahrain back on track as we try to make it to a second straight Olympics.”
