Artists from around the world are being urged to put their creative skills to the test in a first-of-its-kind digital art contest in Bahrain aiming to inspire change for a ‘new urban future’.
The My Urban Vision Digital Art Competition, which is part of the UN-Habitat’s flagship programme, ‘Inclusive Communities, Thriving Cities’, challenges artists to think outside the box and produce digital artwork that transforms their community into a sustainable and inclusive one.
The initiative aims to employ urban regeneration as a tool to reduce spatial inequalities and poverty and support the social, economic and environmental transformation of deprived areas. The transformation is expected to lead to an increase in equality of outcomes for all.
“This competition is a great way to bring residents and locals together to encourage creativity and sustainability among different communities,” UN-Habitat Bahrain’s head Dr Fernanda Lonardoni told the GDN.

Dr Lonardoni ... encourage creativity and sustainability
“At UN-Habitat we are constantly looking for ways to engage with different members of the community – whether it be the youth, elderly or children – and what better way to do this than by sparking inspiration, creativity and collaboration to work towards common goals.”
Registered entries will be evaluated under three categories, and the selected artworks will be put on display at one of the UN-Habitat global events, which is yet to be finalised and confirmed.
The three categories include Inclusive and sustainable communities: Reimagine vibrant urban spaces where diversity is celebrated; Climate resilience in urban areas: Demonstrate how nature-based solutions can enhance cities’ ability to adapt to climate change; and Adequate housing and services for all.
Participants can submit their works through various digital formats including digital drawings and paintings, vector graphics, infographics, typography or lettering designs, 3D modelling, artificial intelligence, rendering and digital photo manipulation.
The artwork must be in PNG or TIFF, and the format should be A3 (portrait or landscape) and sent in 300 DPI resolution.
A group of UN-Habitat’s Flagship Programme members will be the judges and they will choose the three top places in each category.
The top winner in each category will be awarded a digital certificate, and their works will also be featured during global events hosted by the United Nations. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive honourable mentions.
The deadline for submissions is June 30.
Established in 1977, the UN-Habitat is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. Based in more than 90 countries, it also works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities.
