BASKETBALL – BAHRAIN’S youth basketball national team will be taking part in the FIBA U18 Asia Cup GBA Qualifiers, set to be hosted by Kuwait from July 29 to August 3.
All six GCC nations are set to compete in the Gulf Basketball Association (GBA) event.
The Bahrainis are in Group B for the preliminary round along with Saudi Arabia and Oman. Group A features Qatar, the UAE, and hosts Kuwait.
The nationals open their campaign against their Omani counterparts on July 30 and then take on their Saudi rivals the next day. The top two teams from each group move on to the semi-finals on August 2, and then the gold and bronze medal contests will be held the following evening.
The champions and runners-up of this GBA competition will both secure berths in this year’s FIBA U18 Asia Cup, scheduled for September in Amman, Jordan.
Bahrain’s youth team have begun their preparations for the competition with practices at the Bahrain Basketball Association Arena in Um Al Hassam.
In the previous edition of the FIBA U18 Asia Cup GBA Qualifiers held in 2022 in Dubai, the Bahrainis came away with the bronze medals after finishing behind Qatar and Saudi on the final ranking. They defeated Kuwait 55-45 in the game for third place.
Despite coming away with a medal, they did not qualify for the continental championship, which was held later that year.
