Three defendants were sentenced to six years in prison each by the Lower Criminal Court for stealing gold bars worth more than BD800,000, while five others received jail terms ranging from six months to two years for concealing the stolen items.
The Public Prosecution said it received a report from the Capital Governorate Police Directorate’s Umm Al Hassam Police Station about the incident.
Investigations revealed that the three main defendants broke into a house that was unoccupied at the time, stole the gold bars, and then handed them over to the remaining defendants, who concealed the items despite knowing they were proceeds of theft.
All eight suspects, whose ages and nationalities were not revealed, were arrested and the stolen gold bars were recovered during searches of their residences. During questioning, the defendants admitted to the offences.
They were remanded in custody pending investigation before being referred to the Lower Criminal Court, which handed down the sentences.
