The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Claims Court has ordered a woman to pay AED118,600 (approx. BD12,140) in compensation for stealing a SIM card and a phone from a man. According to reports, the woman, an Asian national, was given the phone and SIM card by the man when she joined her job.
But she continued using the phone and the SIM long after leaving the company, leading to accumulated charges equal to the fine amount.
The court found the woman criminally liable for stealing the plaintiff's phone and sim card and using it without his knowledge for four years. The court also fined the woman Dh30,000 for inflicting moral damage on the plaintiff and ordered her to pay all legal and court fees.
However, the court refused to hold the defendant liable for any future charges or fees on the phone number, as the plaintiff did not provide any evidence to suggest that the woman still possessed the phone or SIM.
According to court documents, the woman didn't even show up to defend herself despite being sent multiple links and text messages regarding the proceedings.
