FOOTBALL – UAE’s Sharjah FC and Al Wehdat SC of Jordan shared the points after an entertaining 2-2 draw in their AFC Champions League Two 2024-25 Group C tie last night.
The result meant both sides moved up to four points, with Al Wehdat leading the group on goal difference.
Sharjah sounded a warning in the fifth minute when forward Paco Alcacer got into a one-on-one situation with Al Wehdat’s Abdallah Alfakhori, with the goalkeeper spreading himself well to block the attempt.
However, the former FC Barcelona and Villareal CF striker took his second opportunity with glee four minutes later, exchanging passes with Caio Fernandes before sweeping home to put Sharjah ahead.
A hopeful punt forward caught Sharjah napping in the 28th minute with Ousseynou Cesar winning a foot race against Mario Katinic before slotting past Adel Alhosani to equalise for the Jordanian Pro League outfit.
After a breathtaking end-to-end contest in the first half, Sharjah head coach Aurelian Olaroiu and his Al Wehdat counterpart Rafat Ali set their respective teams on a more pragmatic approach that saw no efforts on target produced in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
That changed in the 62nd minute with Cesar pouncing a defensive mistake by Cho Yu-min to lift the ball over the advancing Alhosani, however, parity was restored four minutes later when Darko Nejasmic stole in at the back post to nod in Sharjah’s equaliser.
