A group of MPs is seeking Tamkeen support for Bahrain’s athletes, coaches, administrators and technical staff.
A ground-breaking proposal, spearheaded by Parliament services committee acting chairman Mohammed Al Olaiwi along with four others, is aimed at bolstering the sports sector whilst also addressing the challenges faced by clubs and federations.
“The proposal seeks to encourage greater participation by Bahrainis in sports at both competitive and administrative levels,” he said.
“By offering financial support to those involved in national sports teams, the plan aims to attract more talent to the sector, ensuring long-term growth and sustainability,” he added.
One of the key goals of the proposal is to alleviate the financial burden on sports clubs and federations, said the MPs.
“Many organisations struggle to allocate sufficient resources for both operational expenses and developmental initiatives.
“By providing financial assistance through Tamkeen, these organisations can redirect their budgets towards talent development, infrastructure and training programmes.”
Under the proposed plan, financial support would extend to individuals working under contract in national sports roles, including athletes, coaches and technical staff.
Details of the financial aid structure have yet to be finalised, but it is expected to include monthly stipends, training allowances or incentives for outstanding performance.
The programme would also prioritise Bahrainis, aligning with the country’s broader nationalisation efforts across various sectors.
“Local clubs and federations stand to benefit significantly from this initiative,” said Mr Al Olaiwi.
“These organisations can focus on strategic initiatives, including scouting and training young talent, improving facilities and participating in international competitions.
“The move is also expected to improve the quality of sports in Bahrain by providing better support systems for athletes and staff, making sports a viable career choice for Bahrainis.”
Mr Al Olaiwi said this proposal aligns with Bahrain’s Vision 2030 strategy, which emphasises human capital development and the diversification of the national economy.
The MPs behind the initiative also believe it could enhance Bahrain’s reputation on the international stage.
The proposal submitted yesterday to Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam would now be reviewed by the services committee.
Stakeholders, including sports clubs, federations, and Tamkeen representatives, are expected to collaborate to ensure the success of the proposal.
Public response has been positive, with many applauding the MPs’ efforts to prioritise sports and youth development in the country.
