HORSERACING – VICTORIOUS Forever contender Caballo De Mar powered to a sensational victory yesterday in the Group Two Betfred Howard Wright Doncaster Cup Stakes, held at Doncaster Racecourse in Britain.
The five-year-old bay gelding triumphed in the 18-furlong race to pocket close to £95,000 for his connections.
The result continued the outstanding achievements this international horseracing season for the Victorious Forever racing yard, owned by His Majesty King Hamad’s humanitarian works and youth affairs representative, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman, and Bahrain Royal Endurance Team captain Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Trained by George Scott, Caballo De Mar was ridden yesterday by jockey Oisin Murphy. They put in a strong finishing charge after starting off travelling well in the middle of the seven-horse field.
They picked up the pace over three furlongs out in a move for the front, and were soon in the lead. They continued to build their advantage heading down the home straight and kept on well over the final furlong, eventually crossing the finish line well clear of the pack.
Caballo De Mar and Murphy triumphed with a length-and-a-quarter’s gap from runner-up Beylerbeyi, racing for owners Midtech Two and trainer Ian Williams, with Clifford Lee in the saddle. Ascending finished in third for C Jones, Henry De Bromhead, and WJ Lee.
Rounding out the classification from fourth through seventh, respectively, were Epic Poet, Peace Belle, Berkshire Sundance, and Winday.
