Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa has stressed that Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad and follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, has become one of the most diversified economies in the region, moving away from its dependence on the oil sector.
In reply to a question by MPs regarding the implementation of the Government Plan 2023-2026, he said the non-oil sector’s share of the GDP increased to 86 per cent by the third quarter of 2024.
“This is a reflection of the government’s efforts to implement initiatives that give top priority to achieving the economic recovery and sustainable development goals stipulated in the government plan 2023-2026. Until the end of 2024, almost 68pc of the initiatives listed in the plan had already been carried out.
“The plan’s implementation progress is monitored through an advanced electronic system that continuously evaluates ministries’ work, project timelines and key performance indicators. Periodic reports are regularly submitted to the Cabinet and the committees responsible for tracking the progress of projects and adherence to time schedules,” he said.
Referring to the main signs of economic recovery, he said the government has so far implemented 22 out of 27 programmes listed in the Economic Recovery and Fiscal Balance Plan launched in October 2021.
Aiming to create promising job opportunities for Bahrainis and making them the first choice in the labour market, the plan includes employing 20,000 and training 10,000 Bahrainis every year until 2024. In 2022, there were 29,995 citizens employed and 10,344 trained; in 2023, 29,533 employed and 11,078 trained, and in 2024, there were 27,147 employed and 19,859 trained. The achievement in 2024 represents an increase of 136pc and 199pc over the set targets, he added.
