The King Hamad Global Centre for Coexistence and Tolerance recently celebrated the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaiming January 28 as the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence.
The resolution, spearheaded by Bahrain in collaboration with allied nations, marks a pioneering global initiative that reflects the kingdom’s unwavering commitment, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad, to promote the values of peace, tolerance, dialogue and mutual understanding while rejecting extremism and hatred and upholding human, religious, cultural and ethnic diversity.
Undoubtedly, this historic move solidifies Bahrain’s leadership role in spreading the culture of peace and dialogue among nations.
For decades, Bahrain has steadfastly embraced cultural pluralism and religious tolerance, fostering harmony among different sects and communities on its soil. The adoption of the resolution reflects the kingdom’s rich experience as a model to be emulated in a world fraught with tensions and divisions.
Since childhood I have witnessed diverse religions, sects and doctrines coexisting in harmony, peace and mutual understanding in Bahrain. Mosques, ma’atams, temples and churches stand side by side, reflecting Bahrain’s deep-rooted values of coexistence. I personally have lived through this era and even my late father used to visit other religious communities on their special occasions, ensuring that we accompanied him. I have continued this noble tradition, which is at the heart of our Islamic faith.
Amidst the growing global challenges – wars, conflicts and extremism – the importance of upholding the values of peaceful coexistence and fostering a culture of dialogue and mutual respect becomes increasingly evident. The adoption of January 28 as International Day of Peaceful Coexistence serves as a reminder to the world of the need to coexist and overcome differences to achieve peace and stability.
This recognition is not merely an achievement for Bahrain but also a call for all nations and societies to seriously work towards building bridges of communication and strengthening the spirit of human solidarity. It is a shared responsibility that requires everyone to embrace initiatives that promote mutual understanding and propagate a culture of peace, free from fanaticism and hatred.
With this achievement, Bahrain outlines a future shaped by peace and global understanding, sending a message of hope in humanity’s ability to transcend divisions and build a world of greater tolerance and coexistence. It is upon all of us – individuals and institutions alike – to contribute to transforming this day into an opportunity to spread the values of coexistence and work towards a brighter future for all.
May God bless Bahrain as an inspiring model for nations and a beacon that illuminates the path of coexistence and humanity, carrying the message of peace beyond borders to become a global voice for goodness and harmony.
