ATHLETICS – BAHRAIN’S superstar sprinter Salwa Eid Naser ran a sub-23 seconds time en route to finishing fourth in the women’s 200 metres at the Grand Slam Track Kingston meeting held in Kingston, Jamaica.
The event was the first of two within less than 24 hours for the former world champion. Naser is also entered to race in the women’s 400m at the meeting.
Naser finished the half-lap race not far behind winner Gabrielle Thomas of the US, who clocked a mark of 22.62 seconds in first place.
Reigning world and Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic was the runner-up in 22.93s, while Dina Asher-Smith of Britain followed in 22.96s.
Naser had a finishing mark of 22.99s in fourth, which was her second-best so far this season in the distance. She had previously registered a new personal best of 22.45s in a victory in the Dominican Republic in late March.
Classified behind Naser in Kingston were Talitha Diggs (23.30s) and Alexis Holmes (23.33s), both from the US, and Stacey Ann Williams (23.35s) and Nickisha Pryce (23.75s), both from Jamaica.
The 26-year-old Bahraini will be amongst the same high-quality field in the 400m race.
Naser is a multi-titled elite athlete and a former world champion in the women’s 400m. She also bagged the silver medal in the same race at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which was her maiden Olympic medal.
She is expected to be one of Bahrain’s top medal hopefuls at this year’s World Athletics Championships, set to take place in Tokyo from September 13 to 21.
