Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest footballers of all time, who plays for Saudi giants Al Nassr, has dropped a cryptic social media post after their 3-2 loss to Al Fateh in the final round of the Saudi Pro League.
Al Nassr finished third in the table, which means the Riyadh-based team will not be in the AFC Champions League Elite next season.
After the game, Ronaldo posted on social media: “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all.”
Ronaldo has played 111 games so far in all competitions with the Saudi team, scoring 99 goals and winning only one regional trophy two years ago.
The FIFA Club World Cup will take place next month in the US. Al Nassr will not be participating in the 32-team tournament, but their biggest rival, Al Hilal, is.
On the other hand, Lionel Messi, whose career trajectory is incessantly compared with Ronaldo's, will play in the tournament when the US team Inter Miami faces the Egyptian side Al Ahly in the opening game on June 14.
The internet is abuzz with rumours that Ronaldo is interested in participating in the FIFA Club World Cup, as Brazilian team Botafogo or Moroccan giants Wydad AC might sign him up. However, no official statements have been made.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has claimed "there are discussions" over Ronaldo playing at the Club World Cup this summer during an interview with YouTuber IShowSpeed.
