An integrated surgical team at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) has successfully performed a delicate operation to remove a tumour from a critical area of a patient's brain using Awake Craniotomy technique (operating when the patient was awake)—the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman.
The procedure is considered one of the most advanced and complex neurosurgeries that require extreme precision and close coordination among members of the medical team to ensure that the patient is fully awake and maintain critical functions.
The surgery was conducted by Dr. Ghassan Salim Al Sudairy, a senior consultant neurosurgeon, and a select group of Omani experts from various specialties.
During the hours of the surgery, the medical team kept interacting with the patient, and this helped remove the tumour completely without any neurological side effects.
The accomplishment constitutes a milestone in the development of the national health system, affirming the competence of national cadres and the readiness of Omani health institution to keep pace with the latest global updates in the medical field.
