Sitaare Zameen Par, the spiritual sequel to 2007’s Taare Zameen Par stars Aamir Khan as an out of work basketball coach who gets ordered to coach a team of neuro-divergent adults after getting into trouble with the law.
If you think that storyline seems familiar, it’s because Sitaare Zameen Par is an official remake of the much-celebrated Spanish film Campeones from 2018. But just because it is a remake, doesn’t mean this movie doesn’t have anything new to offer.
Sitaare Zameen Par is a fun and light movie perfect for a family night out – with enjoyable performances from most of the cast, several touching moments and plenty of laughs.
The movie doesn’t try to re-invent the alphabet, per se. It is content in following in the basic plot as the original. What sets this one apart however, is the performance by the supporting cast.
The entire cast of neuro-divergent adults in this movie (all of whom have either Down syndrome or are on the Autism spectrum in real life) is what makes this movie worth seeing. Stand-out performances come from Genelia Deshmukh and Gurpal Singh.
Not only does it shine a light on what these individuals themselves go through, it also very deftly shares what their families go through too.
Just like 2007’s Taare Zameen Par, chances are this movie will also b e a big hit with kids. In the theatre that I watched it in, they were totally entranced.
And, just because it is an enjoyable movie doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its faults, such as its run time. The movie goes on for 2 hours and 35 minutes, which is far too long in my opinion.
Star Khan also gives an inconsistent performance, at times portraying great emotion depth and character but every once in a while switches back to the expressions and mannerisms from his previous movies (PK, Laal Singh Chaddha) – just wide-eyed disbelief.
None-the-less, Sitaare Zameen Par is a heart-warming flick filled with plenty of laughs.
Verdict: A perfect movie to watch with your kids.
