ATHLETICS – BAHRAIN’S former world champion and Paris 2024 Olympics silver-medallist Salwa Eid Naser is set to hit the track this evening at the 64th Ostrava Golden Spike in the Czech Republic.
The superstar sprinter will be competing in the women’s 400 metres in the meeting, which is a Gold-level event as part of this year’s World Athletics Continental Tour.
Naser will be running for the second time in a week in a major European competition. She previously participated in the same race at the Meeting de Paris of the Wanda Diamond League, where she finished second with a time of 48.85 seconds – her third time this year to dip under the 49-second mark.
Naser is currently ranked second in the world in the women’s 400m. Her season’s best so far is 48.67s, while her personal best is 48.14s.
Naser will be going up against a quality field that includes hurdles superstar Femke Bol of the Netherlands. It is reported to be their first duel individually in their careers. Bol has a personal best of 49.17s, and will be making her debut in the 400m this season.
The other competitors in the race are Nicole Yeargin (season’s best of 51.99s) of Great Britain, Barbora Maikova (51.23s) of the Czech Republic, Lada Vondrova (51.50s), also of the Czech Republic, Martina Weil (49.83s) of Chile, Natalia Bukowiecka (50.44) of Poland, and Lynna Irby-Jackson (49.87s) of the US.
Naser is expected to be amongst the kingdom’s top athletes who will be competing at this year’s World Athletics Championships, set to take place in Tokyo from September 13 to 21.
