CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious riders claimed two victories last night while also claiming a couple of podium finishes in their respective national championships held across Europe.
Jakob Omrzdl won the elite men’s road race in the Slovenian event and was joined by Bahrain Victorious teammate Matevz Govekar on the podium in third. Meanwhile, Alessandro Borgo secured first place in the men’s under-23 road race in the Italian meeting while Seth Dunwoody took third in the same under-23 event in Ireland.
The quartet were amongst nearly a dozen Bahrain Victorious members who were in action against some of the best riders in their countries.
Each national championship featured elite road races for men, women, and under-23s, along with individual time trials for each class.
Omrzel triumphed in Slovenia after completing his race’s 181.3-kilometre distance in four hours 10 minutes and 10 seconds. The Bahrain Victorious Development Team star crossed the finish line solo and was 25 seconds ahead of runner-up Jaka Marolt. Govekar followed in third 33 seconds back to join his teammate in the top three.
Meanwhile, Borgo, who is also a member of the Bahrain Victorious Development Team, was the winner in the under-23 road race in Italy. He finished the 177.1-kilometre event ahead of Dario Igor Belletta, while Simone Gualdi came third.
In Ireland, Dunwoody was competing in the combined men’s and under-23 race, held across a 168.2km distance. He finished fifth overall 29 seconds behind winner Rory Townsend, which was enough to also put him on the podium amongst the under-23 riders.
Other Bahrain Victorious members competing yesterday were Rainer Kepplinger in Austria, Vlad Van Mechelen in Belgium, Fran Miholjevic in Croatia, Nicolo Buratti, Damiano Caruso, and Edoardo Zambanini in Italy; Torstein Traen in Norway, and Oliver Stockwell in the UK.
