Investigations into an allegation that officers assaulted an individual during a gathering has been closed after it was revealed that the person was actually hit by a stone thrown by another protester, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) said.
The incident occurred in Diraz on June 25.
Video clips circulating online showed a person getting injured during the gathering, with claims that police officers assaulted him while responding to the gathering.
The SIU launched an investigation, reviewed video footage, documented its content, and assigned a forensic pathologist to assess the nature and cause of the injuries. Officials also closely monitored the individual’s condition until he was discharged from hospital.
“Investigations concluded that the actions of the officers were within the scope of their legal authority and followed established legal frameworks,” the SIU said in a statement yesterday.
“It was determined that the individual was injured by a stone thrown by rioters at Public Security Forces.
“This was confirmed with certainty through video evidence clearly capturing the moment of injury, which aligned with the forensic report stating that the head injury resulted from being struck by a stone.
“As a result, we have decided to close the investigation, finding no responsibility on the part of the officers for the injury.
“A copy of the case has been referred to the Public Prosecution to take the necessary legal action against the protester responsible for the injury.”
