Saudi Arabia is joining the international community in observing World Population Day, marked annually on July 11 to raise awareness about population issues and their relation to sustainable development and the environment.
The observance was initiated in 1989 by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in response to rapid global population growth and the pressing need for accurate and reliable data to support development strategies. In line with global statistical advancements, the Kingdom — through the General Authority for Statistics — adopted cutting-edge technologies and international methodologies to conduct its population census to ensure high-quality, precise data and enhance the reliability of statistical indicators used to develop national plans and policies.
A dedicated team was assigned to review and verify census data based on the highest international standards, utilising modern analytical tools and advanced statistical methods, and working in full coordination with various government entities. The approach enabled the development of a precise database that now serves as a key reference in shaping economic and social policies.
The Saudi Census 2022 is considered the most comprehensive and accurate in the Kingdom’s history, achieving a data accuracy rate exceeding 95%. The result was made possible through more than 1 million telephone calls, nearly 900,000 field visits, and a thorough review of over 200 statistical indicators. The methodology applied in conducting the census received widespread praise from international experts as one of the best global practices in the field.
