Algerian doctors have revealed that many private clinics across the country charge different prices for childbirth based on the gender of the newborn.
This revelation caused a massive stir in Algeria, with many calling the practice sexist and emotionally manipulative. Some clinics are reportedly charging as much as double if the baby is a boy.
The practice is justified by some who point out that certain parents prefer having a child of a specific gender, with boys often being preferred as they are considered "heirs" and carriers of the family name, according to several Algerian doctors.
However, doctors state that the baby's gender makes no real difference to the childbirth process. Typically, the price only differs depending on the method of childbirth, whether natural or C-section.
Doctors in Algeria are now demanding that authorities intervene to ban the practice and hold those involved accountable
