BASKETBALL – BAHRAIN continues to step up its preparations to host the 26th edition of the Arab Men’s Basketball Championship, to be held later this month under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority (GSA) chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
The tournament will take place from July 25 to August 2 following the withdrawal of Tunisia from hosting duties.
Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) president Alaa Mudara thanked Shaikh Khalid for the patronage, ongoing support, and profound interest in basketball. He emphasised that this sponsorship serves as a major motivation and an added incentive to work diligently to ensure the success of this prominent Arab event.
Mudara said that hosting this important championship supports Shaikh Khalid’s vision to make Bahrain a leading destination for regional and international sports events. He also highlighted that Shaikh Khalid’s support plays a key role in Bahrain’s ongoing sports achievements and in raising its profile both in the Arab world and internationally.
Mudara added that they deeply appreciate the trust shown by the Arab Basketball Confederation in choosing Bahrain to host the championship in short notice, which highlights the kingdom’s strong reputation for organising major sports events.
He went on to say that the BBA are committed to delivering an outstanding edition that lives up to the tournament’s legacy and Bahrain’s sporting image. He added that they are working closely with official bodies to ensure a well-organised event that meets the expectations of the teams and fans.
The Arab Men’s Basketball Championship 2025 is considered one of the oldest tournaments in the region and attracts wide participation from elite Arab teams. This enhances its significance as a prominent sporting platform and offers the kingdom yet another opportunity to showcase its capabilities in organising and hosting sporting events at the highest level.
Meanwhile, the BBA announced yesterday the formation of the competition’s organising committee.
It is chaired by Mudara, and includes representatives from the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Information, and GSA.
The committee extended its appreciation to Shaikh Khalid for his patronage and unwavering support in ensuring the championship reflects Bahrain’s distinguished reputation in hosting major sporting events.
The committee also expressed gratitude to the involved ministries and entities for their cooperation and contributions to facilitating the tournament’s success.
Mohammed Ahmed was appointed as championship director, leading a fully integrated team including Fawaz Shamsan, who will oversee media and communications; Ghazi Radhi, who will be managing marketing; Ahmed Galdari, who is handling hospitality and reception; and Mohammed Abdul Samad, who is in charge of finance.
Games will be taking place at Khalifa Sports City Arena in Isa Town.
The kingdom’s senior men’s national team is currently competing in the 44th William Jones Cup in Chinese Taipei, which is helping them gear up for the upcoming Arab challenge. It is expected that the roster for the tournament will be largely unchanged by head coach Georgios Vovoras, especially given the brief short period between events.
