One child dies every hour in Gaza, Unicef spokesperson Ricardo Pires has said.
He said that what is happening in Gaza –particularly to children – is beyond description.
“Words fail to capture the scale of this humanitarian disaster,” he said, adding that millions of children have been suffering since the war began.
Pires pointed out that ‘thousands of children have been killed since the start of the war’.
Speaking in an interview with Cairo News channel, Pires explained that children in Gaza are dying from hunger and thirst, facing relentless bombing day and night. They are repeatedly displaced, losing their families and homes.
He added that the months-long blockade has deprived them of even the bare minimum, including food, shelter, and even painkillers.
Pires described the situation as ‘unprecedented’ in his work with the United Nations, saying that the level of suffering and deprivation endured by Gaza’s children surpasses even the worst disasters the organisation has faced globally.
He emphasised that the UN’s ability to operate in Gaza is now extremely limited due to the ongoing war, starvation and the collapse of infrastructure.
