A woman in the UAE has filed for a divorce settlement of approximately Dh 1 billion (BD 100 million), which, if successful, would likely represent the largest divorce award ever granted in the Gulf region, according to Byron James, the woman's lawyer.
The divorce case is between two Muslim residents of the UAE who are of Caribbean origin and are members of vastly wealthy families.
“While the details of the claim are private, the size of the award being sought reflects the scale of the family’s wealth,” her lawyer said.
He added that the principle at the heart of this case was that what is built together should be shared fairly.
The largest reported divorce settlement in the Gulf region to date is a no-fault divorce between a foreign couple, resulting in a DHR 100 million settlement (BD 10 million).
