AQUATICS – BAHRAIN’S all-new World Aquatics centre of excellence will open later this year, World Aquatics president Husain Al Musallam announced yesterday.
This came during his address at the World Aquatics general congress, held in Singapore on the sidelines of the World Aquatics Championships 2025.
Al Musallam noted that the centre of excellence – built in partnership with the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC), Bahrain Aquatics, and GFH Financial Group – will be the seventh in the world, adding to similar facilities in the US, Canada, France, Australia, Hungary, and Thailand.
The kingdom’s World Aquatics centre of excellence will aid in the development of Bahraini athletes, who will receive on-site coaching and educational support through the federation’s various programmes.
In attendance at yesterday’s general congress were BOC secretary general Faris Al Kooheji, Bahrain Aquatics president Abdullah Atiya, and Bahrain Aquatics board member Abdulla Matar, as well as International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Kirsty Coventry and former IOC president Thomas Bach.
Al Musallam further reviewed World Aquatics’ achievements over the last four years. Among these are increasing the number of scholarships provided to athletes and raising the total of certified coaches worldwide, raising the funding given to national federations, awarding a record amount of prize money in World Aquatics competitions, establishing a policy to protect women’s aquatics sports, and welcoming 206 nations competing in this year’s World Aquatics Championships.
