The Housing and Urban Planning Ministry has announced the start of construction and renovation works on 300 housing units as part of the first phase of the Muharraq City Development Project, alongside major upgrades to infrastructure and public services.
Minister Amna Al Romaihi confirmed that land preparation for the 239 properties acquired in designated neighbourhoods has progressed according to schedule, with development already underway at completed sites, while preparations continue for the remaining plots. The first phase is set for completion next year.
She explained that the project’s designs and master plans were developed in collaboration with one of the world’s leading consultancy firms.
Based on these plans, tenders were awarded and contracts signed to launch the first phase of construction and development.
The minister noted that the 300 new and renovated housing units are being built to the specifications outlined in the official design guidelines issued by the Urban Planning and Development Authority.
These guidelines emphasise reviving traditional Bahraini architectural styles in Muharraq’s historic neighbourhoods, while also meeting the modern needs of Bahraini families who will be resettled in these areas.
In addition to housing, the first phase will include the redevelopment of 63 streets and lanes, with comprehensive infrastructure upgrades to ensure capacity and efficiency in the redeveloped zones.
Plans also provide for 360 parking spaces, designed to serve both residents and visitors.
The locations and capacity of these car parks were determined based on detailed engineering and traffic studies.
The minister stressed that these efforts reflect the ministry’s commitment to deliver the outputs of the first phase within the scheduled time frame, ensuring both the preservation of Muharraq’s cultural identity and the provision of modern housing and services for its residents.
