A tourist town in Northern Italy is proposing a daily fee for visitors who want to bring their dogs.
Bolzano, a town situated in the Tyrolean Alps and a popular destination among tourists and hikers, is proposing a €1.50 fee per animal per night, starting in 2026.
Residents, too, will face an annual ownership fee of around €100 per dog.
The plan by Bolzano’s provincial government aims to cover the rising costs of street cleaning and public services associated with dog waste. The proposed revenue would be used for extra waste bins, maintenance of green spaces, and the creation of designated dog areas and parks.
The proposal is set to replace a controversial dog DNA registration policy in Bolzano, aimed at identifying irresponsible dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets.
