WWE has changed the title of its October 7 show to ‘Showdown’ from ‘Invasion’ after it sparked outrage among Israeli fans.
The show name ‘Invasion’, though popular with WWE fans, caused a stir in Israel after the event was announced for this month. Israeli officials were reportedly unhappy about the choice of the name, and newspaper Israel Hayom heavily criticised it, even sending a letter to WWE.
While ‘Invasion’ is highly regarded in Wrestling, ‘Showdown’ only brings bad memories for fans. The last time WWE used the name ‘Showdown’ was for the short-lived event ‘Super ShowDown’. The last two ‘Super ShowDown’ shows in 2019 and 2020 were both voted Wrestling Observer’s worst show of the year. One match on the 2019 show was considered so terrible that WWE made a documentary about how bad it was.
Many commenters online have criticised WWE for their decision to change the name, commenting on how they should not have given in to the pressure.
