A friend of mine recently did something that may sound unusual but struck me as a thoughtful investment in the future. On the day His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, met the new Pope for the first time, he went around supermarkets and hypermarkets buying every available paper edition of the Gulf Daily News and other Arabic newspapers covering this historic moment.
He spent around BD12 that day, but he told me he considered it a ‘wise investment’ claiming he will sell them for easily BD1,000 in 10 years’ time.! After all, a single day’s newspaper edition never gets reprinted, and its value as a historical record only grows with the passing years.
I thought this was not only a clever investment but also a way of preserving Bahrain’s history for future generations to see.
