HANDBALL – Bahrain's senior men’s handball national team were drawn in a tough group yesterday for the 22nd Asian Men’s Championship, set to take place in Kuwait City, Kuwait, from January 15 to 29 next year.
The tournament’s draw was held yesterday by the Asian Handball Federation (AHF) in Kuwait. It determined the groups for the competition’s preliminary round, which features 15 senior men’s squads from across the continent.
Bahrain are set to play in Group B alongside Iraq, China, and Jordan.
Group A features defending champions Qatar, South Korea, and Oman; Group C includes hosts Kuwait, the UAE, Hong Kong, and India; and Group D is composed of Japan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Australia.
The tournament also serves as the Asian qualification event for the 30th IHF Men’s World Championship, which is to be held in Germany from January 13 to 31 in 2027.
The top four teams will punch their tickets to the worlds.
The kingdom’s national team are currently in a training gathering under Swedish head coach Robert Hedin.
They are gearing up for their upcoming competitions, including the sixth Islamic Solidarity Games, which will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 7 to 21; as well as the Asian championship.
Hedin has called on 26 players for this period, which includes an overseas training camp in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The roster is spearheaded by long-time skipper Hussain Al Sayyad, and it includes Mohammed Abdulhussain, Mohammed Habib Ahmed, Hassan Al Samaheeji, Hassan Madan, Hussain Mahfoudh, Mohammed Habib Nasser, Mujtaba Al Zaimour, Hassan Mirza, Qassim Qambar, Jassim Khamis, Mohammed Hameed, Mahmoud Hussain, Ali Redha, Ahmed Redha, Jaafar Abdulshaheed, Ali Mahmoud, Hesham Ahmed, Ali Al Asheeri, Hussain Abdulla, Mahmoud Jaleel, Mu’ayyad Samir, Abdulla Abdulkarim, Ali Al Madani, Al Sayed Mahmoud Al Falahi, and Salman Al Shuwaikh.
