CUE SPORTS – BAHRAIN’S billiards superstar Hussain Maroom bagged the national team’s first medal – a gold – in the Arab Championships 2025, currently being played in New Alamein, Egypt.
Maroom secured first place in the junior men’s nine-ball singles competition to get the kingdom’s bid for multiple titles off to a strong start.
He clinched his Arab crown following a dominant 9-3 win against Mohamad Nasir from Kuwait in their final. Earlier, Maroom beat another Kuwaiti Ahmad Altatan 8-6 in a tight contest in the last four, which came following a convincing 7-1 triumph against Egypt’s Michail Yousif in the quarter-finals.
Maroom had qualified for the key knockout stages through the losers’ bracket in the double-elimination event. He narrowly fell to Yousif 6-7 in the first round, but then went on to beat Khalid Altamimi from Qatar 6-1, Salman Alzahabi from the UAE 6-0, and Mohamad Saed from Libya 6-2 to earn his place in the last eight.
Maroom is one of four Bahrainis in the men’s billiards events. The others are his brother Haider Maroom, Ebrahim Al Qaed, and Faisal Almaliki, while Nahla Al Sunni, Aisha Buhazza, and Jood Al Majed are competing in the women’s billiards competitions. In snooker, Bahrain’s squad features Habib Sabah, Hisham Al Saqr, Khalil Busaif, Abdulla Alaali, and Abdulla Mohammed.
There are 16 nations taking part in the championships. Along with Bahrain, the others are Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Kuwait, Oman, the UAE, Qatar, Palestine, Tunisia, Syria, Iraq, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and hosts Egypt.
