Oman’s Interior Minister Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal Al Busaidi, accompanied by Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, yesterday visited the Open Prisons Complex, where he was received upon arrival by Deputy Interior Minister Lieutenant General Adel Al Fadhel.
Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing director general Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa provided a briefing on the facilities and services offered at the complex, emphasising efforts to meet the necessary requirements for beneficiaries and uphold the highest international standards in human rights.
He also presented an overview of the positive results achieved through the expansion of the Penalties and Alternative Measures Law and the implementation of the Open Prisons Programme, in addition to launching further rehabilitation and training initiatives for beneficiaries.
He noted that the Open Prisons Programme represents a landmark achievement in Bahrain’s human rights record, due to the royal directives of His Majesty King Hamad, and the government’s commitment, under the leadership of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to ensure the project’s implementation in accordance with the highest international human rights standards.
The briefing also outlined the objectives of the Alternative Sentencing Project and the Open Prisons Programme, and the remarkable successes they have achieved through educational and vocational programmes and reform plans designed to rehabilitate inmates, modify behaviour and facilitate their gradual reintegration into society.
The Omani minister and his accompanying delegation toured the Open Prisons Complex, where they viewed educational buildings equipped with modern systems, residential units providing comprehensive living services and a sports club building that supports the physical and vocational training of beneficiaries.
The Omani minister praised Bahrain’s advanced achievements in the field of human rights, expressing his appreciation to the Interior Minister for his efforts in expanding reform and rehabilitation programmes, as well as the positive societal impact of alternative sentencing.
