Kuwait’s Health Ministry has announced sweeping new regulations regarding the sale and distribution of energy drinks across the country. Health Minister Dr Ahmed Abdulwahab Al Awadhi issued a ministerial decree introducing age restrictions, consumption limits, and widespread sales prohibitions.
The new regulations stipulate:
• Location Bans: A total prohibition on sales in schools, universities, and all government institutions and entities. A ban on sales in restaurants, cafes, grocery stores, and food trucks. This restriction extends to vending machines and online delivery platforms.
• Age Limits: Energy drinks may only be sold to individuals aged 18 and above.
• Content & Consumption Caps: Daily consumption is limited to a maximum of two cans per person. Furthermore, caffeine content must not exceed 80 mg per 250 ml per can.
• Labelling: Producers and importers are required to place prominent health warnings on all packaging.
• Marketing Ban: A complete ban on all commercial advertising and sponsorships linked to energy drinks.
Sales are now strictly limited to cooperative societies and parallel markets, and only within designated, specific areas within those outlets.
