FOOTBALL – THE second edition of the Khalid Bin Hamad Cup football tournament kicks off this evening with the first of two semi-final matches between holders Al Khaldiya and Riffa.
The highly anticipated contest is scheduled for a 7pm kick-off at Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Isa Town.
It will be followed by the second fixture in this stage of the competition tomorrow between reigning Nasser Bin Hamad Bahrain Premier Football League champions Muharraq and Sitra. Their clash will be held at the same venue with a similar start time.
The winners of the two games will then battle for the crown on Saturday.
Tonight’s clash is a rematch of last year’s tournament final, when Khaldiya beat Riffa 1-0 to become the first-ever champions in the Khalid Bin Hamad Cup.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, along with Bahrain Football Association president Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, were on hand in the title decider and presented Khaldiya the prestigious trophy.
With the result, Khaldiya came away with a cool BD20,000 in prize money as the winners of the national tournament in its inaugural edition, while Riffa took home BD10,000 as runners-up.
