Bahrain’s Busaiteen fencing team settled for the silver medal in the Arab Women Sports Tournament in Sharjah, after a disheartening defeat in the final against Oman’s Salalah team.
Busaiteen reached the decider after a thrilling 45-42 victory over the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club in a semi-final characterised by intensity and thrilling final moments. Salalah qualified for the final after a resounding 45-12 victory over the Kuwaiti Shooting Club in the semi-final.
In the épée competition, Busaiteen’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals after a 35-40 loss to Kuwait’s fencing team in a closely contested match.
Busaiteen had a remarkable presence throughout the tournament, both in terms of results and performance.
They had secured Bahrain’s first medal of the Games – a bronze won by Ritej Haitham Araoud in the individual foil event – and reached the final in the team competition.
Busaiteen fencing coach Zakaria Amer expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasising that the results reflected extensive training programmes prior to the competition.
He praised the performance of Ritej, who was participating in her first Arab Championships and won the bronze medal in the individual foil competition, in addition to the silver medal the team won in the foil event.
Amer added that the team’s progress from one championship to the next is a positive indicator, noting that the group had won two bronze medals in the previous edition.
He expressed hope that they will continue to build on these results in future competitions, achieving the aspirations of everyone and solidifying the team’s presence on the Arab stage.
Bahrain’s archery team Riffa, meanwhile, lost the third-place match to the Kuwaitis 4-6 at the Al Hamriya Cultural and Sports Club.
The match was closely contested, with the Bahraini team delivering a high level of competitiveness and showcasing impressive technical skills, reflecting their extensive preparation.
The team comprised Suha Khalafallah Sheikh, Maryam Issa Anbar and Sarah Abdulrahman Marzouq.
In basketball, Hala suffered their second defeat (54-100) against favourites Tunisia’s Al Amal, one of the most organised and technically skilled teams in the tournament.
Hala are scheduled to play against the UAE’s Khorfakkan tomorrow at 1pm Bahrain time.
The squad will try to get back on track and produce a favourable outcome by strengthening the technical elements that were seen in the first two games.
Meanwhile, Riffa Shooting Club is stepping up its preparations for the shooting competitions, which will kick off tomorrow, amidst strong participation.
The competitions will feature five teams, including Sharjah Women’s Sports Club, Kuwait Shooting Club, Saudi Club and Rumy Sports Club from Qatar.
