An alleged drugs deliveryman tried to swallow two bags of cocaine in an attempt to hide the illicit substance after realising that he was about to be arrested by police, a court heard.
The 29-year-old Nigerian is standing trial at the High Criminal Court on charges of possessing hashish, cocaine and meth with intent to both sell it and use it personally.
The bust, through which the defendant was arrested, began with detectives receiving a tip from an informant about an ‘African national’ named Frank who is known for selling narcotics.
An undercover police informant asked to buy BD150 worth of cocaine and BD50 of marijuana from him, the court heard, after developing a friendship with Frank and gaining his trust.
They agreed to make the exchange near a hotel in the Diplomatic Area, where Frank reportedly sent a representative – the defendant – to make the delivery on his behalf.
“The suspect came to the meeting spot on a bike, but he felt like he was being watched by policemen, and tried to get back on his bike to leave,” the detective earlier told the Public Prosecution. “He took two small bags out of his sleeve containing a white substance and put them in his mouth, trying to swallow them.
“He was arrested, and on his person, we found the two bags in addition of six bags of marijuana, a bag of meth and an e-cigarette cartridge containing CBD oil.”
Nothing was found in the Nigerian’s Umm Al Hassam flat when it was searched, he added.
The defendant reportedly admitted to distributing drugs through direct delivery or through dead mail, acting on behalf of this mysterious ‘Frank’ who has not yet been identified or arrested. He also admitted to possessing drugs for personal use. In his urine, traces of hashish, meth and cocaine were detected.
Judges adjourned the hearing to March 16 for a lawyer to be appointed to defend him.
