Police are investigating a freak accident in which three pedestrians were killed when a car careered off the road near Jidhafs in the early hours of yesterday.
Two of the victims died instantly after the collision on Al-Sahla Street. A third expatriate was also seriously hurt and passed away in hospital a few hours later from the multiple injuries he sustained despite desperate efforts by medics to save him.
They were all restaurant workers, good friends, and had just finished their late shift in the kitchen. They were walking home to their accommodation when the tragedy happened.
The car was driven by a Bahraini man and carrying three passengers when it suddenly veered off course, according to eye witnesses. Early reports suggested it was involved in a collision with a bus. The car’s occupants were all hurt and taken by ambulance to Salmaniya Medical Complex for treatment. A minibus parked on the side of the road was damaged.
The deceased were identified as Pakistani Muhammad Idrees, 38, Indian Mir Islam, 24, and Bangladeshi Sundor Miah, 43. The Interior Ministry in a statement yesterday said the men had been ‘standing on the side of the road’.
A stunned friend told the GDN that the colleagues had been walking home to their accommodation, which was only a few minutes away from the restaurant where they worked.
“We are all deeply saddened by the news,” he said.
“They were walking along the pedestrian lane when a car tragically struck them. Two of them died instantly, while the third was rushed to hospital but sadly passed away in the early hours of the morning.”
Family members were being contacted last night.
Accident investigators are working to determine the circumstances and exact cause of the accident.
The authorities once again urged drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and pay attention while driving to ensure their safety as well as the safety of other road users and pedestrians.
