It is always a joy to read the Voice of Bahrain, our local Gulf Daily News, it seems like a never-ending cycle of repeated stories.
Specifically, I refer to the following articles:
Midday work ban (Page 5, March 31). Well, my grandfather, my father, and myself all managed to survive and thrive whatever conditions God put upon us in Bahrain. We all employed people and managed to ensure no-one got sick or injured due to the heat; amazingly, we understood our climate and made adjustments as and when it was too hot or humid. The Labour Ministry was always available to protect the employer and worker. Out of 70 years, we never had a complaint in this respect. I remember only two days that our worker decided it is too hot/humid, and of course we suspended work as per common sense.
Strait of Hormuz (Page 6-7). In 1973 I ended up attending boarding school in Switzerland for a year as the Strait of Hormuz, and the Arab nations may be attacked. I was at the Bahrain (US department of defence) School in Juffair, which remained open, and the only war was in October 1973, Egypt and the famous Israel.. at each other’s throats. Funny enough, close to 50pc of the students in Switzerland were rich Iranians from the Shah’s regime, very educated and clever students, who eventually made their way to Los Angeles after the Shah’s regime was overthrown.
Plea to instal proper drainage outlets in residential garages (Page 11). I have been experiencing and reading about Bahrain’s drainage infrastructure challenges since the 1960s. Some things never change…Israel the same since 1948…always at war, attacking and subverting someone.
The Federal Reserve, to wait and see, page 18, with Wall Street, indexes advance, page 19; all preparing to cash in on the Gulf War…who could have guessed?
For me, none of this is news, only a repeat of the history. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it, George Santayana.
Still, the Gulf Daily News is my favourite newspaper, the Voice of Bahrain.
