Bahraini visual artist and engineer Shaikha Maryam bint Hamad Al Khalifa has highlighted the profound power of art during times of crisis, describing it as a medium capable of conveying messages that words often cannot.
In recent weeks, a number of creatives have taken to social media to share their thoughts and emotions amid ongoing regional tensions, reflecting the impact felt by citizens and residents across the kingdom.
Shaikha Maryam, a member of the Bahrain Fine Arts Society, also unveiled a colourful artwork inspired by the resilience of the country and dedicated to its leadership. The piece seamlessly blends the elegance of Arabic calligraphy with intricate geometric prints. “At its centre is the word Al Raheem (The Most Merciful), one of the names of God, conveying a message of reassurance that divine mercy surrounds humanity, even in the most challenging times,” said Shaikha Maryam, who holds a Master’s degree in Interior Architecture and Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, US.
“The use of Arabic calligraphy goes beyond decoration; it serves as a visual expression of identity. Combined with geometric patterns rooted in Islamic heritage, it symbolises our culture and deep connections among Gulf societies.”
Her use of cool blue tones conveys the emotional depth of the current situation, while subtle touches of violet and pink evoke a sense of renewal and emerging life. “Our Gulf is one and our people are one,” she said, emphasising that stability naturally flows from unity between wise leadership and a socially aware community.

Shaikha Maryam also described art as both a human necessity and a powerful tool for strengthening social cohesion and supporting psychological well-being.
She noted that today’s creatives act as a ‘visual voice’, documenting moments in time while reshaping them through unique, locally inspired perspectives that foster hope.
She praised His Majesty King Hamad for guiding the nation through recent challenges with resilience, reinforcing unity and national belonging.
Shaikha Maryam has participated in several exhibitions in both Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, including showcases at the Bahrain Fine Arts Society and the Safeya Ali Kanoo Hub, among others. The GDN has spotlighted a number of creatives who have been using their art recently to express solidarity and support for the kingdom.
Among them is a recent ‘blooming’ artwork by VOID Design Agency, which reimagined buildings, homes and businesses damaged during Iranian attacks.
Through vibrant, renewed visuals, the piece transforms a period marked by concern and uncertainty into one of hope, resilience and rebirth, delivering a powerful message that restoration and renewal are always possible.
The GDN also featured Bahraini artist Shaikha Dwa bint Khalid Al Khalifa, who created a series of striking digital paintings that vividly capture her emotions and deep connection to the kingdom amid regional challenges.
