GCC GAMES – Bahrain will be facing off with Oman when they begin their men’s volleyball gold medal bid at the fourth GCC Games in Doha, Qatar next month.
The multi-sport meeting is scheduled from May 11 to 22 with elite athletes from all six GCC nations taking part.
The Bahrain Volleyball Association confirmed the senior men’s national team’s schedule for their competition.
It follows a rescheduling of the results of the tournament’s official draw, held last week in the Qatari capital.
The nationals will be playing five games in their event, which will be held in league format.
Their contest with their Omani counterparts is scheduled for May 16.
The Bahrainis are then set to take on the UAE the next day before battling Kuwait on May 19.
They then play Asian volleyball juggernauts and hosts Qatar on May 20 in their penultimate fixture, after which they complete their schedule against Saudi Arabia on the GCC Games’ concluding day on May 22.
The kingdom’s spikers are expected to be amongst the top contenders for the podium in their sport.
They were the silver-medallists in the previous edition of the GCC Games held in Kuwait City in 2022, when Qatar took gold and Oman won the bronze medals.
That ended Bahrain’s impressive run as back-to-back champions from the event’s two earlier editions in Dammam, Saudi Arabia in 2015 and in the inaugural GCC Games at home in 2011.
The Bahrain Olympic Committee have yet to confirm the total number of sports that Bahrain’s delegation will be competing in in Doha.
Volleyball is one of the 19 sports that will be held as part of the GCC Games’ programme.
The others are athletics, basketball, 3x3 basketball, handball, table tennis, squash, padel, fencing, boxing, taekwondo, karate, swimming, billiards, snooker, shooting, archery, equestrian, and bowling.
The sports in this year’s GCC Games will be hosted across 10 venues, including Aspire Dome, Qatar Sports Club, Khalifa International Tennis, Squash and Badminton Complex, Lusail Shooting Range, Al Gharafa Sports Club, and other leading sports facilities.
