A university student was fined BD1,100 for causing a ruckus in her college and later recklessly slamming an office door, which accidentally struck an employee’s hand and left her with a permanent injury.
The incident happened when the defendant allegedly entered a bathroom reserved for university faculty, and became involved in an altercation with employees after being told that students were not permitted to use the facility.
The injury occurred later after she was called to an office following a complaint by staff members. As she was leaving, she allegedly opened and slammed the office door with ‘excessive force’, causing it to strike an employee’s hand.
The Lower Criminal Court convicted the student of insulting a department head and two university employees, all of whom are civil servants, and held her responsible for causing a permanent disability assessed at three per cent. She was fined BD1,100.
The court also granted the injured employee the right to pursue compensation through the Civil Court and ordered the defendant to pay BD100 in temporary damages.
The student challenged the verdict before the High Criminal Appeals Court and later the Court of Cassation, but both appeals were rejected, making the ruling final.
According to court documents, the incident took place in October 2025 in Capital Governorate, when the student reportedly entered bathroom facilities with a sign on the door that read ‘employees only’.
A staff member informed her that students were not allowed in the bathroom, to which the defendant allegedly responded that ‘it’s none of your business’, with a tone described by the court as ‘indicative of a lack of respect’.
This prompted the employee to report the matter to her department head.
In the office, the defendant kept uttering offences, including ‘condescending and threatening statements’, the court heard.
She allegedly laughed and said: “Sis simply saw me in the bathroom.”
Court records state that when the department head urged her to show respect to those present, she responded: “This is too much, I’ll call my dad, and when he comes, you’ll know whose daughter I am.”
As she left the room, the student allegedly slammed the door without due care, causing it to hit an employee’s right hand.
The victim sustained fractures to her right wrist, and a medical expert later assessed the injury as resulting in a permanent disability of three per cent.
