Manama: A big shipment of tobacco byproducts has arrived in Bahrain amid a shortage of cigarettes, sources said yesterday. The imported cigarettes, which were flown in, will be distributed to shops within two days with the bulk of it going to Airport Duty Free, which is facing an acute shortage over a week.
The shortage is likely to continue for another week as the imported quantity wasn’t enough to fully meet local demand.
The GDN reported earlier this week that suppliers of tobacco products have attributed disappearance of cigarettes from Bahrain’s markets to their failure in supplying retailers with cigarettes because they aren’t ready to implement the excise tax which took effect on December 30.
They said they are yet to receive the final lists of tobacco prices and a meeting with the Finance Ministry to clarify certain points and approve the final list had been postponed until further notice.
